Addison Improv Comedy Showdown Results 4/10/2005 10:03 PM - Dallas - "It was a comedy evening to remember as we saw most of Dallas' comedy royalty gather under one roof to witness a very real comedy drama. Sunday's Comedy Showdown between Shawn Halpin and Paul Varghese followed outstanding performances by Matt Golightly, Jerry Rocha and headliner Doug Stanhope at the Addison Improv. In the showdown that followed, both contenders delivered strong 7-minute performances that showcased the best of two extremely talented comedians. After some detailed, valuable and at times funny critiques by Comedian Jerry Rocha, Radio personality "Big" Dick Hunter, Improv waitress Monique, Radio Personality "Puggs" of 105.3 fame and Doug Stanhope, the judges in a 3-2 split decision voted Shawn Halpin the winner and both comedians shook hands. However, the decision didn't hold for long. Apparently the unpredictable, often politically incorrect, normally unapologetic Doug Stanhope was looking for the competition winner to cough up a more politically correct reconciliation to heal the tear in Dallas' comedy brotherhood. In an unexpected twist, Doug Stanhope, the respected comedy veteran and judge, stepped in to reverse his vote after failing to get a kinder, gentler winning statement from the still deeply offended but pleasant Halpin. Clearly the competition did little to heal the personal rift between the two comedians. With the original vote reversed, it was hard to miss the irony. The incident reportedly stemmed from the reversal of a booking decision and ended in what seems to have been the reversal of at least one judges decision, enough to change the outcome of the competition for Halpin. Seems, sometimes events on stage reflect a broader reality. As we understand it, originally the incident between Varghese and Halpin escalated as the result of a series of reputation bruising email exchanges and comments that included insults, accusations and charges not easily settled on-stage or off, especially for an ex-marine comedian like Shawn Halpin and comedy competitor like Paul Varghese. The audience witnessed a real "reality show" where the Improv stage, Doug Stanhope, Shawn Halpin and Paul Varghese seem to have served up a life lesson for any smart enough to decipher it. So who really won? Probably the audience.
